Business Exit Strategy - Retirement

A sample case

» A family had built a trading company for over three generations. They were approached by a competitor in 2006 with a generous and very attractive offer for the company combining cash and stock in a publicly traded company.

The decision presented a unique set of issues and opportunities for the multi-generational family.

We initiated a dual approach to the planning and investment process. We suggested that the family place the proceeds of the sale in short-term time deposits at several banks to give them time to plan properly. A series of trusts were created to begin the process of cascading wealth down to future generations. Some of the solutions were quite simple (annual gifting, paying for education, etc.) while others were more complex and required sophisticated analysis and execution.

We brought in external specialists on insurance to evaluate current policies and assess future needs. We then customized portfolios for each entity designed to meet the stated goals. By slowing down the transition process we were able to ensure the implementation of a proper trust and estate planning exercise.
